The English governing body of rowing have announced that a bid from St Helens Council to stage commonwealth games rowing events on the Hotties is being taken seriously. The bid which would see teams from places as far afield as Mozambique skimming across the crystal clear waters has started to gather real momentum since local Celebrities Johnny Vegas, and Sir Alan Sugar has been rumoured to have put their weight behind the bid.
Its alleged that Vegas himself may start some of the events, by blowing on an air horn which he bought from Just The Job, Vegas told us “I always knew I would use this for something one day, (pointing to the horn), and getting behind this bid has given me just the chance I have been waiting for”. The Council meanwhile have stated that these events will bring some much needed prosperity to the town, they are already planning to lay on a warm local welcome for all the foreign visitors who will throng the streets. One of the ideas beeing mooted is a giant car boot sale which would take place on the vacant land opposite the cinema and which would have an International flavour added by selling curries. A council spokesman Ben Tasfuk, told our reporter “We have been wondering what to do with this piece of prime real estate for some time, we may be able to get some money out of the Government to help us along”, he said with a smirk.
